OSKAR SCHLEMMER
TRIADIC BALLET, 1922
”[…] Schlemmer’s choreographic endeavour constitutes an appropriate model for modern dance, as a new form of performance in the wake of the nineteenth-century aspirations to a Gesamtkunstwerk. This hypothesis is in sharp contrast with common assumptions about the canons of dance modernism, usually defined by two other trends in modern dance rightly considered in the scholarly literature as major references: the Ballets Russes’ modernist ballets and the German Expressionist dance. The very concept of abstract dance might be understood as an apparent opposition in the terms; as a theoretical issue, it confronts us with more challenging questions and brings up new answers. […] The Triadic Ballet represents a place of tensions followed by resolutions, where Schlemmer successfully conducts a renegotiation of deeply-rooted tendencies: abstraction-expression; mechanised-human bodies; heterogeneity-homogeneity of an art work constituted by a dialogue of different mediums. SEMICONDUCTORS
BLACK RAIN, 2009
“Black Rain is sourced from images collected by the twin satellite, solar mission, STEREO. Here we see the HI (Heliospheric Imager) visual data as it tracks interplanetary space for solar wind and CME’s (coronal mass ejections) heading towards Earth. Data courtesy of courtesy of the Heliospheric Imager on the NASA STEREO mission.
Working with STEREO scientists, Semiconductor collected all the HI image data to date, revealing the journey of the satellites from their initial orientation, to their current tracing of the Earth’s orbit around the Sun. Solar wind, CME’s, passing planets and comets orbiting the sun can be seen as background stars and the milky way pass by.
As in Semiconductors previous work ‘Brilliant Noise’ which looked into the sun, they work with raw scientific satellite data which has not yet been cleaned and processed for public consumption. By embracing the artefacts, calibration and phenomena of the capturing process we are reminded of the presence of the human observer who endeavors to extend our perceptions and knowledge through technological innovation.”

SCHHPLTTLR, 2010
“An inter-disciplinary performance inspired by the movements of “Schuhplattler” (traditional bavarian folk dance). Processing, Arduino, and Max/MSP platfroms were used to allow dancers to control lights and generate music via custom bio-feedback sensors. The performance was held on 15 July 2010 at MaximiliansForum, Munich, Germany.”
